Exploring the Top Metal Roof Profiles for Your Home or Business

Steel roofs are a popular choice for Australian homes due to their durability and resistance to the country's harsh climate. Today we are going to discuss the four main types of steel roof profiles used in most roof and wall cladding projects throughout Australia. We will explore the unique advantages and what factors to consider when selecting the correct profile for your new project.

1. Corrugated roofing:

One of the most popular profiles of steel sheeting is Corrugated roofing. Its distinctive S-shaped corrugations make it strong and durable, able to withstand high winds and heavy rain. It is commonly used on homes, sheds, and agricultural buildings due to its affordability and versatility. The minimum roof pitch for corrugated roofing is typically five degrees (5⁰) or higher, depending on factors such as the length of each sheet, the expected rainfall intensity and material thickness.

2. Trimdek roofing:

Trimdek roofing profile has a flatter pan and higher rib height than corrugated roofing. These features make it more suitable for commercial and industrial buildings due to its increased drainage capacity. It is also able to be installed to a minimum pitch of two degrees (2⁰) for long roof lengths, making it a suitable option for small to mid-sized commercial roofs. In recent years, it has become another popular choice for pitched residential roofs due to its modern and sleek appearance. Its flat surface also allows for easier installation of solar panels.

3. Spandek roofing:

Spandek roofing has a similar profile to Trimdek roofing with very similar sized ribs of the sheets, however the pans are much narrower. This profile is much more rigid and durable than Corrugated and Trimdek roofing. It costs slightly more than other profiles. It is commonly used on industrial and commercial buildings where strength and durability are essential. It can be installed to a minimum pitch of three degrees (3⁰).

4. Klip-lok roofing:

Klip-lok roofing is the most expensive type of steel roof profile of the standard range but is also the most durable product. Its interlocking design creates a completely watertight seal, making it perfect for buildings in areas with heavy rainfall or extreme weather conditions. Klip-lok has a concealed fixing design in which a bracket is installed to the roof frame first. Then the interlocking Klip-lok roof sheeting is clipped on to the engineered concealed bracket. This design allows for Klip-lok roof sheeting to be installed to incredible lengths over hundreds of metres, as the concealed fixings are not affected by thermal expansion. Combined with the wide sheet pan and rib height, the drainage capacity of Klip-lok far exceeds that of the previous profiles. It is also able to be installed to a minimum pitch of one degree (1⁰) making it a viable product in almost any situation.

In summary, the four main types of steel roof profiles in Australia each have their own advantages and applications. When installed in accordance with manufacturers specifications and National Construction Code requirements, all metal roofing profiles have proven to be an ideal covering providing your building with long term protection against the elements. All profiles discussed in this blog are available in Zincalume Steel, the full range of Colorbond Steel colours, as well as a variety of base metals and metal thickness.
