Roofing plays a vital role in every Queensland home, providing protection against the elements. To make informed decisions about your roof, it's crucial to understand roofing terminology. To help, we'll unravel the common roofing lingo.


Colorbond: A popular roofing material. Colorbond is a pre-painted steel product known for durability and versatility. It comes in various colours to suit your home's aesthetics.

Tin Roof: While not always made of tin, this term is used colloquially to refer to metal roofing, like Colorbond or Zincalume.

Gable Roof: A pitched roof with two slopes meeting at a ridge. It's a common design for homes, allowing for better ventilation.


Hip Roof: A roof with slopes on all sides, with each side meeting at a ridge. Hip roofs are known for stability and resistance to strong winds, making them suitable for QLD's climate.


Pitch: The steepness of a roof. Higher pitches are more common in regions with heavy rainfall, to encourage water runoff.


Profile: The specific design and shape of a roofing material, impacting aesthetics, functionality, and water-shedding abilities.

Solar Panels: Common in QLD due to the sunny climate, solar panels are installed on the roof to generate electricity from sunlight.


Roof Truss: The structural framework that supports the roof. Trusses are designed for strength and stability.


Batten: Thin strips of wood or metal used to support and secure roofing materials, creating a stable surface for installation.


Tie-Downs: Essential in QLD to secure the roof to the structure, protecting against cyclones and high winds.


Sarking: A reflective foil layer placed under the roof covering to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heat transfer.


Insulation: Material that regulates temperature and conserves energy by preventing heat loss or gain in your home, promoting comfort and efficiency.


Scribing: The process of fitting a piece of roofing or flashing material to an irregular or non- standard surface to ensure a proper fit.
